Now before you get all excited, thinking you're going to be in a Metal Gear Solid style game where you make weapons out of drinking straws, chewing gum, and loose change... this is going to be a mobile game. I'll let the collective *sigh* settle down... then give you the rest of the story.
Many 1980's movie/tv properties have be resurrected as games in the last couple years. Some have been terrible like last month's Rambo game, some were pretty good like Terminal Reality's Ghostbusters game from a few years back. MacGyver seemed like an unlikely choice to be made into a game... but the mechanic of collecting materials to build weapons and tools has been around in games for a pretty long time. The game is currently in development at Fairplay Media, but no official screens have been released.
I'd also like to take a moment to point out the irony that this is a mobile game, and if MacGyver had a smartphone it would have probably ruined the premise of the entire show.
Fairplay says it will be a puzzle game, so I can image using your touch screen to put together items. The original creator of MacGyver, Lee Zlotoff, has been involved with the game and says a portion of the profits will go towards The MacGyver Foundation.
So while it might not be the game that we all want... at least the money goes towards keeping the MacGyver franchise alive. For those of you still looking to get your 80's fix, I'll remind you that Avalanche Studios' next-gen open world Mad Max game is still scheduled to come out this year.
