Compared to other video game genres, 4X strategy is few and far between. To prove my point, take a look at the number of full 4X strategy titles released on Steam between January 2016 and now: 12 games total. In other words, almost enough to count on both fingers and toes. So for 4X strategy fans, it's always great to see another game hailing from the category. This time around, it's Ashdar Games' Stars in Shadow, which looks to stand out from other games in the art department. Published by Iceberg Interactive, Stars in Shadow has recently settled into Steam's Early Access Program, and it's famished for feedback. Fortunately, said feedback received will be applied before the end of 2016... hopefully.

According to Sven Olsen, lead developer of Ashdar Games:

"Our goal is to make a game that really plays well, rather than one that is just a long list of features. 4X games benefit from intensive polish, and while we do still have more to do, I think EA players will be pleasantly surprised by how much depth is already there."

So what should players expect when exploring the galaxy Stars in Shadow offers?

Well, besides the above:

Epic Scope

Players will be able to traverse throughout four eras of technological advancement. You'll be able to discover "the science of planetary terraforming," but you'll also be able to upgrade your infantry battalions to battle mechs and transform your fleet of destroyers to Dread Stars - which are as powerful as they sound.

Varied Factions

According to Iceberg Interactive, seven playable factions and six alien races will be made available. As you would expect from a typical 4X strategy title, each faction will exhibit different research strengths and technological options. You'll be able to form alliances, conquer neighboring species, or even discover ancient artifacts, which lead to new methods of research!

Stylized Setting

What sets Stars in Shadow apart from other 4X strategy games is the style. Think comic book - as in vibrant and bold all too often. Additionally, you should expect to encounter unique cast of characters.

High-Level Strategy

Yeah, it won't be something to plow through on a rainy afternoon. Not at all. Your strategizing talents will be fully utilized, thanks to a streamlined resource and planetary improvement model.

Deep Turn-Based Tactical Combat

Finally, you will able take part in 2D turn-based tactical space battles that... again rely on strategy. The tactical engine will enable players to provide multi-ship commands. Furthermore, smart AI will allow the player to stop focuses so much on micromanagement and more on the greater picture.

If you want to take a dive into the starry ocean, then you'll be able to navigate to Stars in Shadow on Steam's Early Access program at $24.99, though there is a 20 percent discount the week of launch on Steam.
