While the folks in the West are all talking about the upcoming Detective Pikachu movie, Japan is going full force on the near opposite: a 3D animated Pokémon movie.
The Japanese Pokémon YouTube channel recently released a 30-second trailer for Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution. The film appears to be a modern, three-dimensional adaption of Pokémon: The First Movie from 1998. Ash, Misty, Brock, Pikachu, and everyone else we can't remember comes face to face with the legendary experiment, Mewtwo.
The idea of remaking a film that has a nostalgic place in many hearts. What has most people's attention, however, is the new graphical direction. Instead of the traditional two dimensions that Anime is accustomed to, the entire film is in 3D. The characters retain their large heads and larger eyes common to the medium. It gives it the same, strange look that Jump Force, has, really.
Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution releases in Japanese theaters on July 12. There's no word of it being released in America or Europe at this time. So for now, we will have to be happy with our live-action Detective Pikachu.
