With two short days left until the end of the year, it’s only natural that the biggest game of 2017 would break yet another record before the ball drops.
We’ve reported on PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds quite a bit this year, especially the rising number of players who have been drawn to the game as it cruised through open beta. But now the full game is released (Hooray?) and it seems those astronomically high numbers are only getting higher. Maybe because it was a popular gift with the Steam Winter Sale in full swing?
Regardless, Steam Database revealed over Twitter earlier today that PUBG managed to hit 3 million concurrent players, easily making it the most popular game on the Steam storefront and possibly in the entire gaming world at the moment. The next most popular game, DOTA 2, had less than half that many players, with 1.29 million.
That is damn impressive. Also included in the tweet was the total number of players, which right now sits somewhere at 26 million, which would make PUBG more popular than other non-Steam titles like League of Legends and Hearthstone. Overwatch still has a strong lead, having celebrated 35 million players earlier in October, but when the game is made “official” in China, 9 million players will be an easy gap to bridge.
Regardless, congrats to the PUBG team. Now if only they could use some of their fabulous wealth to fix the network issues, we could really cap off 2017 right.
