Ya’ll might remember that way back in 2012, David Cage (the man responsible for Indigo Prophecy, Heavy Rain, and Beyond: Two Souls) released a demo called Project Kara, which was released as a sort of teaser between Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls. You can check it out below if you need a seven-minute refresher.
Nothing really came of that at the time, of course, it was just showing off emotion and junk but now, three years later, that demo has finally come to bear some kind of fruit, as David Cage has just announced Detroit, the ‘game’ that will follow Kara’s adventures into the real world, where she can feel rain, bring other cyborgs to life, and ineffectively monologue about the state of her existence. Also the whole thing ends with a “Hi, my name is _____ and this is my story”, so… the writing has already lost a lot of oomph but then I guess if you’re a newly awakened android you can’t be expected to know about overused narrative conventions.
David Cage, of course, is known for making story-heavy movie-games that have more lulls in the action than most games have loading screens, but while I’d say he’s lost a lot of punch in recent years it’s good to see he’s still got work. If nothing else, it shows there’s still a market with these things, even if Supermassive Games have already made the best David Cage game yet.
Oh well. High hopes for you, Detroit. Hopefully you won’t suck the way your namesake does.
