It began on 4Chan. The site, known for its prioritization on anonymity, is often the host for video game leaks, both real and fake. One recent post showed the poster holding a Super Smash Bros Ultimate game case open, with the cartridge inside. Like with anything on the internet, it was taken with a healthy dose of skepticism.
The image itself didn't necessarily reveal any new information about the game. It shows us what the inner sleeve background, which details the game's full roster. But that's it.
Not long after, the leak was reported on, and later confirmed by, SSBUNews. They claim that private sources can confirm the legitimacy of the leak, while also warning against potential spoilers by others.
"We were able to privately confirm that this is indeed real. The person claims to have no interest in spoiling anything in regards to World of Light or Classic Mode.
However, it should be noted that if one copy is out in the wild, it is very likely that there may be more."
The original poster had yet to reveal where or how the acquired a copy of the game. Though it's not uncommon for one rogue game copy to be followed by more. Those in the community have been suggesting that folks block or avoid certain YouTube channels and social media accounts if they don't want unknown aspects of the game spoiled for them.
Super Smash Bros Ultimate releases formally on December 7 for the Nintendo Switch.
