We initially found out that the official release date, as confirmed by Rockstar, was fall 2017. While this technically is still the official release date, a Polish retailer may have spilled the beans on the specific release date. Gaming website CD-Action supposedly spotted an October 3rd release date on MediaMarkt's release date listing and decided to do some investigative work. MediaMarkt explained that the developer (Rockstar) had informed them of the official release date, and so they updated Red Dead Redemption 2 on their website with the date. Reddit user Adakam8323 translated the Polish MediaMarkt's statement, but here is the most relevant part:
"I would like to inform you that our marketing department was informed by [the] distributor of the game that its airing date is 3rd of October 2017"
MediaMarkt quickly changed the October 3rd date on their store page back to the original placeholder of December 31, 2017. It's entirely possible that MediaMarkt did share the correct information regarding the release date and shared the private information with the public as an accident. Rockstar most likely contacted them immediately after finding out, telling them that the information was not for the public and demanding them to retract their previous statement. Whatever they did, it worked. MediaMarkt then went on to state that the October 3rd release date was an error, which if we're being honest here, is pretty unlikely. At least let's hope it is because an early October release date sounds pretty good to me. Rockstar isn't known to make public statements based on leaked information, so I'm pretty certain radio silence will continue. That being said, an October 3rd release date is entirely possible. Just don't get too hyped up yet.
