Well, we’ve waited, we’ve laughed, we’ve cried, we’ve seen how freakin' OP the turrets are, and now it is finally time: Overwatch, the squad-based character-focused first-person MOBA thing, finally has a proper release date. May 24th.
This will be the first time Blizzard has launched a new IP since they first launched Starcraft in 1998. That’s 18 years.
In addition to an official launch date, Blizzard also announced that the game will be undergoing one more open beta, running from May 5th to May 9th. If you pre-order the full game before the 29th of April, you can even play the Beta two days earlier with a friend, which means you’ll get two days of extra time to regret pre-ordering a game you may not have actually gotten to try yet. This open beta will include all the maps and all the characters, making it the closest to the full version of the game we have yet to see.
The final game will launch on PC and the two consoles you’d expect, hitting shelves at 40 bucks a pop. Of course, you can upgrade to the “Origin” edition, which will unlock content on all of Blizzard's other games, or the Collector’s edition, which will have an artbook, the soundtrack and a statue on top of all that.
Will this be the shooter revolution that Blizzard had promised? Or just another game to be chewed up and spat out by an uncaring gaming public?
Guess we’ll find out.
