Last we left off, the ever-growing world of No Mans Sky brought planetary settlements into our control. Offering a place to settle down and manage our own colony of people. After that, the robots rose up to threaten our livelihood. But now, we must depart, as the high solar seas are calling with Outlaws, the space piracy themed update.

Announced earlier today (but teased by No Mans Sky frontman Sean Murray on Twitter yesterday), the next major update coming to No Mans Sky is called Outlaws. The new content is based around the idea of space piracy, including new pirate factions, enhanced starship combat mechanics, trade smuggling, and even a new class of ship called Solar Ships.

And best of all, its available right now, for free. Heres the full breakdown.

Solar Ships

We started with fighters and hauler, eventually learning about the secrets of the living ships. But the future is now, and its time to take advantage of the best that technology can do. Solar Ships are a new class of procedurally generated ships, best recognized for their large energy-sails that they deploy after launch. They are versatile long range ships with access to unique technology.

Outlaw Stations

Remember those red, abandoned space stations? They lie dormant no longer. Theyre now populated by outlaw groups. Here the player can find special, unpoliced groups of outlaws that buy, sell, and trade in a variety of goods, many of which aren't exactly legal. They can also find special outlaw missions here.

Smuggling Illegal Goods

Outlaw stations will sell contraband. These items are not allowed in normal, regulated stations. But if players manage to sneak some in, they can be sold for a huge profit.

But be careful, because controlled systems now have Sentinel Interceptors, which can scan a ships cargo for just such goods. Would-be smugglers will need a Cargo Probe Deflector to avoid detection.

Space Combat Improvements

A great deal of ship-based combat has been reworked for a better experience. This includes everything from risk/reward changes, improved visual dynamics, weapon reworks, and more.

Star Ship Energy Shields

The defensive aspects of ships have been reworked with a new energy shield system. Each ship has armor and shields. Certain weapons affect both defensive aspects differently, while certain ships might focus more on strong and quick shields over armor plating.

Planet-Side Ship Combat

Not all dogfights take place in the open space anymore. There are outlaw ships and Sentinel authorities patrolling the planet, forcing the player to consider the trees, mountains, and lakes when fighting against an assailant.

Combat Auto Pilot

Tired of losing your target when engaged in ship combat? A new Combat Auto Pilot option might be helpful. When enabled, the ship will automatically center itself on the target. The player can still tweak the fine angle, allowing for precise shots.

Passing Frigate Fleets

Frigates are no longer stationary structures. They can be seen popping in, moving along the open space, and leaving. This includes within a planet's atmosphere.

Attacking Freighters Expanded

Now when the player attacks a freighter to steal their resources, theyll draw the ire of the Sentinels. Too much piracy will result in a bad reputation, which can only be restored by offering a fake passport to Station cores.

Pirate Raids on Settlements

Your cozy slice of heaven may not be as safe as it once seemed. Pirates can appear and attack a players settlement, damaging the building and stealing resources. The only way to stop them is to hop in your ship and fight them off.

Ship Cargo Hold Upgrades

Want more space in your hauler? You don't need to return to your freighter to unload anymore. You can invest in special high capacity cargo holds for each ship, increasing the total carry capacity.

Build a Squadron, Customize your Wingmen

Players can now recruit roaming pilots to join your own personal squadron. They will automatically appear when you enter ship combat and can be summoned at any time to fly in formation with you.

Best of all, they can be upgraded and improved. Each wingman has their own skills, traits, and battle stats, which can be improved on through the Manage Fleet terminal on your Frigate.

Own More Ships

Players previously could own a max of 6 personal ships. This has been expanded to 9. Simple enough

Cloth Physics and Clothing Items

No Mans Sky now supports cloth physics. And theyre making the most of it with new fabric-based cosmetic options. Players can equip capes and hoods to their character, aiding in the mysterious, rugged look of a bounty hunter or outlaw. Check out the Appearance Modifier to see whats available.

New Outlaw Quest Line

A new quest line is now available, focusing in on the Outlaws and their motives. Progressing through it will unlock special titles and customization options.

Expedition Six: Blighted

Taking a narrative focus this time around, the next new Expedition will focus on a galaxy being terrorized by a pirate organization known as The Blight. Participate in the Expedition to learn about the secret treasure while unlocking special limited time rewards like Outlaw clothing, flags, and even a unique Starship trail.

No Mans Sky continues to be one of the most committed to games of the last decade. Were amazed at the level of dedication the developers have put toward the sci-fi adventure game and we remain ever grateful for it.

No Mans Sky is available on Consoles, PC, and Game Pass. The Outlaws update is available now as a free update. More information, including a full changelog, can be found on the games official website.
