It’s been a long time since we’ve heard from the Metroid Prime series—at least five years. Granted, there was that whole “Other M” disaster that people like to ignore, but even if we acknowledged it existed it still doesn’t really count as a Metroid Prime game, given that it’s a prequel. But Nintendo can only ignore such a popular, high-demand franchise for so long, and at this years E3 debuted the trailer for the new Metroid Prime: Federation Force… a four-player first-person co-op game with little to no Samus Aran herself. I’ll let you see the trailer before we dwell any further.
Looks pretty… well… it looks pretty much like a co-op Metroid Prime, that’s what. Other than this trailer and a release date (sometime in 2016) Nintendo was scant with information about this little enigma, which is a shame, because there’s a lot we’d like to ask: where’s Samus? Who are these strange soldiers? What does anything mean anymore?
Nintendo was not quick to answer those questions, or any questions anyone has to ask, but if you’d forgive some light speculation… I know by the canonical end of the franchise, Samus Aran is now a wanted ‘criminal’ to the Federation because she destroyed their research on Metroids, so perhaps she’s missing from the trailer because the players are secretly trying to hunt her down?
Bah. Mere speculation on my end. I suspect we’ll find out more in the coming months.
