Final Fantasy XV launched recently, something at least one of your facebook friends probably won’t shut up about. By most accounts, it’s a good, if not perfect game that takes the Final Fantasy series and at least tries something a little new with it, although that facebook friend of yours probably has a more glowing review written up on their livejournal page.
Anyway, you’d think that the long-awaited continuation of the most famous JRPG would turn some heads and get some copies sold, and you’d be right, but… the game’s success in it’s home country, Japan, isn’t quite as enormous as you might think. Specifically, one week in, it’s sold about 690,471 in retail, putting it at the best-selling game that week. Not including digital copies.
Not bad, right? Well, no, it’s not, but it’s also far from the best a Final Fantasy game has managed. For comparison, Final Fantasy Xlll solid 1.5 million copies in the first week. XII got 1.8 million sold, X got 1.7, and of course Vlll, the one after the one everyone knows, got up to 2.5 million.
Not the worst Final Fantasy game, but far from the best. Still, it was enough to beat Pokemon Sun and Moon, which landed at #2 last week.
Interesting. Perhaps people are Final Fantasied out. Or maybe everyone’s busy playing Dragon Quest Builders or something, who knows?
