Glen Schofield, the co-founder of Sledgehammer Games, was recently seen speaking about Call of Duty: WW2 during GamesBeat Summit 2017. When talking about the campaign for their new Call of Duty installment, Schofield said that they wanted to game to have an authentic story. This means that we will see plenty of racism and anti-Semitism.
I don't know if this is a good move, or if it's just stupid. I understand that this was an issue in WW2, but are they doing this for the right reasons? It almost seems as though they're adding in racism just for the sake of it. Granted, I have no idea what the campaign looks like, but I'm hoping that they actually address it properly. I've played many CoD games, and they really love to include serious issues in their games. The biggest problem is, they don't handle it properly.
The studio has said that they wanted to be respectful in showing this issue, but they don't want to showcase anything unnecessary. Honestly, I have no idea how this is going to turn out. When I first saw that Sledgehammer was doing this, I was pretty skeptical and still am. I just hope that this turns out to be a good campaign without anything horrible written into it. As long as it's done respectfully and isn't this over-the-top, overwhelming presence that keeps getting brought into the story for no reason, I think we'll be okay.
